Not all whites tell the same story.

Warm white is a family, not a single shade. Some lean cream, others pink or green. Start with the things you are keeping: the oak floor, the stone counter, the sofa that already feels like home.

North-facing Burnaby rooms often make a cool white feel flatter. Try a softer, slightly creamy sample beside the trim. Look at it at breakfast and again in late afternoon. Paint a large sample board rather than trusting a tiny printed chip.

Our rule: choose the feeling first, the shade second. Calm, sunny or quietly cocooning? There is a white for each, and daylight gets the final vote.

Borrow a little from the landscape.

West Coast greens work because they already belong here. Moss, cedar and a muted sage connect an interior to the garden without making every wall a statement.

Use your most saturated green where the light is steady. Balance it with linen, oak and a warmer off-white. In smaller Brentwood condos, a green alcove can add depth while the surrounding walls stay light.

Practical advice · 3 min read

The finish is half the feeling.

Colour gets the attention, but sheen shapes the room. Matte softens uneven light. Eggshell adds a quiet glow and is often a practical choice for living-room walls. Satin gives doors and trim a little definition.

No sheen is a shortcut around preparation. A smooth finish begins with filling, sanding and the right primer. Always check the selected product’s guidance for kitchens, bathrooms, cleaning and curing.
